Creation and the glory of God

Psalm 19:1 (NASB)
The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.

Many years ago, I was attending a dinner with a large group of people and the host of the dinner stood up to offer a blessing.  His opening words quoted these two verses.  I had never heard of them before and after the dinner complimented the host for such an impressive beginning to his blessing.  He humbly replied that these were not his words, but God’s words and gave me the reference.  Since that time, often I too will quote Psalm 19:1-2 in my prayers, both private and public and certainly encourage you to do the same.

Think of this verse the next time you have a good view of the sky on a clear night when you can see the stars (i.e. away from big city lights).  Or, if you are able to enjoy the view from a window seat of an airplane flying at night at 37,000 feet.  We are too finite to fathom the vastness of the heavens or the expanse of the earth and the oceans.

Facts about our universe are mind-boggling.  For example, we see the light of stars (and there are more stars in heaven than grains of sand on earth) in the heavens that are billions of light years away from us.  A light year is the distance light can travel in one year at a speed of 186,000 miles per second.  Stars we see now may not exist anymore and there are other stars so far away that their light has not yet had time to reach us.  It’s too complicated to explain here, but there is an explanation for how the light of stars billions of light years away can reach the earth in only a few thousand years.

The point here is that God created the incomprehensible vastness of the universe and we see and understand only glimpses of His creative power.  Two evidences of His power that we can see and enjoy many days of our lives are the sunrise and the sunset.  Psalm 65:8 says “And they who dwell in the ends of the earth stand in awe of Thy signs; Thou dost make the dawn and the sunset shout for joy”.  Think about these “shouts of joy” when you enjoy a sunrise or sunset.  They tell of the glory of God.

What other aspects of God’s creation declare His glory to you?
