Revelation 3:20 (CEV)
“Listen! I am standing and knocking at your door. If
you hear My voice and open the door, I will come in and we will eat
together.”
This verse is used by almost every gospel track or
guidance for inviting people to accept Jesus Christ as their personal Savior
and this is fine. Yet the context of
this verse is the apostle John recording the words of Jesus to the church in
Laodicea. This verse is speaking to
Christians, albeit lukewarm Christians, not to unbelievers. Many believe that the Laodicean church
describes the 21st century church because this church had wealth and
power, but indifference towards love and obedience to Jesus. Note in Rev 3:16 that Jesus rejects lukewarm
followers (“I will spit you out of My mouth”) that is a warning to all
believers today. Think about this.
Two main questions for you in light of the imagery
of Jesus standing outside the door of your life, your heart and knocking?
1. Are you lukewarm about your faith?
Do you claim to be a believer, but know that you are not serving the
Lord very much if at all? Are there
unconfessed, unrepentant sin(s) in your life that have you in bondage that make
you unable or unwilling to serve and live the Christian life?
2. What are you doing to lead others to a relationship to Jesus? The first thing you can do is simply invite
them to come to church. Jesus used both
His voice (words) and His hands (action) to help and lead others. You can do the same and, in fact, are
commanded to do the same (Matt 28:18-20)
Jesus is standing and knocking at your door right
now. Note that the verse says “If
you hear My voice….”. This means that
you need to hear or read God’s Word first, and then you need to respond. So many do not. If you hear His voice and take the next step
to respond (open the door…….that is……be open to His Word and respond to his
teaching), He will enter your heart and your mind and your life and become part
of you. He will then use you to
influence and lead others to open the doors of their hearts and minds and lives
too!
