Psalm 18:2 (NIV)
The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
When I see and read this verse I am reminded of a calendar I bought one year that had verses beneath beautiful and panoramic scenes of nature. One of those months had this verse quoted and, for some reason, this verse and the calendar scene always stuck in my mind. This one verse gives six descriptions of who God is:
· Rock (cela`)—a craggy rock, a cliff—God is your security.
· Fortress (matsuwd)—a net—God snares those who wish to harm you.
· Deliverer (palat)—a rescuer—God brings you to safety, safety from your sin
· Shield (magen)—a protector—God defends/protects you from satanic attacks
· Horn of my salvation (qeren)— God is your power for salvation (Rom 1:16)
· Stronghold (misgab)—a high place—God is your protector
These six words essentially describe God in four “s” words---He provides strength, safety, security, and salvation for your life. These four “s” words can be applied in all situations of your life---as an individual, son/daughter, father/mother, sibling, neighbor, co-worker/boss, friend, Christian servant, and so on. They apply to the physical part of your life, the psychological/mental/emotional parts of your life, and the spiritual part of your life. God gives you strength to face whatever you are facing without being defeated. God gives you safety so that you cannot be harmed by attacks from anyone, most of all Satan himself. God gives you security so that you always can rely on Him to help you get through challenges and difficulties in your life. And God gives you salvation that saves you from the consequences of your sin(s) and enables to be assured of eternal life.
In your life, is God these things to you? Are you calling upon Him to give you strength and safety and security and salvation? Do you take refuge in Him? Do you give a part of your day, especially in the morning, to pray and ask Him to help you live your day as His child, in His grace, and within all His promises to give you what you need to live your day victoriously? How much of your daily life do you live apart from Him? Where do you need to close the gap(s)? Where do you need to improve in your trust in Him to help you live each day fully for the rest of your life?
